Historic railroad crossties can be found along the trail

With fall foliage beginning to peak around Lake Martin, one of the area’s most unique hiking adventures lies near Martin Dam, where explorers can not only catch the brilliant autumn colors and wildlife but also walk through more than a century of local history.

The Cherokee Bluffs Dam Railroad Trail, located near Martin Dam, follows portions of the old railroad system that was once used to transport materials for the construction of the dam. Today, traces of that railroad remain hidden within the woods, offering hikers a glimpse into the history and massive undertaking that ultimately created Lake Martin.
