Comforting Soup

Roasted Tomato Soup

Soup can be comforting any time of the year, but especially in the winter when the weather turns cold. It’s one of those foods that warms you from the inside out. Homemade soups tend to be much healthier, lower in sodium, calories and fat compared to convenient ready-to-eat or canned soup.

Studies have determined that after eating soup, people feel fuller and less hungry than eating solid foods. It is well documented that soup has a significant impact on fullness and weight maintenance. Eating soup in place of solid foods often results in a lower total calorie intake. When soup is eaten at the beginning of the meal, total calories and the amount of food from the meal to follow are typically reduced. Soup may enhance overall diet quality; however, one should remain cautious the high sodium content of canned and packaged varieties. Making homemade soups or choosing a reduced sodium version could be a much healthier option.
