Golden Silk Spider

The golden silk spider is big, almost as big as your hand, and if you’re not a fan of spiders, it admittedly looks pretty darn scary. But this native Alabama spider is actually harmless, helpful, peaceful and – once you get past the shock of seeing a spider this large – beautiful.

These spiders are found in areas of high humidity and open space, so think boathouses, forest edges, roadsides and open woodlands here in the South. Their native range is from the southern U.S. all the way down into Peru and Argentina in South America.
