Where do fish go in summer?

Last month, we discussed why fish transition from one area during the spring to other types of areas in the summer. To know where the fish may be transitioning to, it’s important to know where they came from. Springtime fishing primarily revolves around the spawn. That means the fish are going to be close to those areas where the spawn will happen.

These are usually protected bays and pockets. In the case of spotted bass, it could even be small secondary points. Water that warms quicker is an option, as well. As the spring season progresses, the water continues to warm. Once water temperatures warm beyond the optimal range for spawning, the baitfish and the predatory fish – like bass, crappie, etc. – move to areas that are cooler. Deep water takes longer to heat and longer to cool overall. Fish looking for more comfortable environments are likely to move to the areas of creeks or lakes that have deeper water in the early transition from spawning locations.
