Soil testing and plentiful sunlight can help produce juicy tomatoes.

Tomatoes are a summer treat and a must-have in the vegetable garden. By early May, most people have already planted tomato plants or are just now getting started. To get to the point where one can pick a nice and lush tomato, a lot of work and care will be required once the tomato plant has been set out or comes up. Managing insects and diseases is a major chore, but fertilizing, mulching, watering and staking may be just as critical, if not more important. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

If you are trying to grow the biggest tomato, the same production practices for most vegetables would still apply. Choose a well-drained site in full sun with a water source close by. Tomatoes need at least six hours of sun, so the more hours of sunlight per day, the better.
