Just a Barbie Girl

Summer 2023 will forever be The Summer of Barbie. The world turned pink, and it was all ‘Barbiecore.’ Brands like Ruggable, Chi Flat Irons, Crocs, Vans and Wrangler, along with cosmetics and even restaurants, had Barbie collaborations. When I saw the first trailer for the movie, I gasped aloud at the part when Barbie steps into frame and out of her shoes, all while remaining on her toes. I watched the movie a few weeks ago and loved every minute. Despite mixed reviews, I knew if someone really loved Barbie, they would love the movie.

I laughed. I cried. It was so much girl power. I won’t give away the plot, but Barbie is having an existential crisis and has to go to the ‘real world’ to sort things out. It made me remember how hard it could be to be a little girl in the ’90s, but it also reminded me of how great it is to be a girl. Barbie is perfection, and she soon discovers there is no such thing in the real world. The real world is messy. Life is messy. We age, but Barbie does not.
