John, Lacey, Mae and Stella - Column photo.jpeg

The truck is rolling north, and my puffy jacket is within reach. Yacht rock radio is on shuffle, the dogs are asleep in the back seat and I’m thinking cheeseburgers taste a little better in Key West.

Unrelated to anything else I may mention here, there is a roadside barbecue stand next to the Green Turtle Inn in Islamorada, Florida. It’s some of the best I have ever had, and you must not pass it if you are traveling down that way. John and I ate thick-cut pork sandwiches prepared by a man with a thick accent on the tailgate of the truck. I later insisted my brother and sister-in-law stop too and bring more to Key West. As native Alabamians, we have eaten plenty of barbecue, and he agreed it was truly the best.
