LifeSouth Community Blood Centers Cord Blood Bank will join organizations worldwide in recognizing World Cord Blood Day on Saturday to raise awareness about the lifesaving potential of umbilical cord donation.

Rich in stem cells, cord blood can be used to treat more than 80 life-threatening diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and certain genetic and immune disorders. Since the first successful transplant in 1988, more than 40,000 patients have received cord blood transplants worldwide, a press release stated.
