Alabama residents have until Dec. 1 to upgrade their driver’s licenses to the enhanced STAR-ID if they have plans that include domestic air travel.

The STAR ID — for Secure, Trusted And Reliable Identification — is required as part of the 2005 REAL ID Act of 2005, passed to strengthen ID requirements for domestic air travel in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The enhanced ID will also be required to enter certain federal facilities, such as military bases and federal courthouses.
