Samuel Higgs / TPI Horseshoe Bend quarterback Loughton Spates was named to the South all-star cross country team this past spring. He also plays basketball and baseball for Horseshoe Bend.

It is not every day you see an all-star cross country runner make the transition from tying up his shoes for a race to buckling up a helmet. However, that’s the case for Horseshoe Bend senior Loughton Spates.

In March of this year, Spates was announced as one of the top up-and-coming cross country runners in the state, being named to the AHSAA South All-Star team along with teammate David Layfield. However, instead of participating in the event, he was learning the playbook.
