For George Bush to get his groove back, conservatives argue, he needs to get tough on government spending and immigration – those are the issues that will re-energize core Republican voters and propel them to the polls. Unfortunately for the president, immigration is also the issue that threatens to thwart his push to turn the Republican Party into a permanent majority.
Given the ever-growing numbers of Latino voters, the call to turn immigration into a key campaign issue could cripple the Republicans for years to come. In a preview of next year’s congressional elections, the Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, Jerry Kilgore, swamped the airwaves with ads demanding a limit on state services to illegal immigrants. His Democratic opponent, Tim Kaine, on the other hand, used ads in Spanish to highlight his endorsement by Hispanic leaders.
