In politics, the easy choices are between good and evil. The hard choices arise when two moral virtues collide. And a growing chorus of voices is now saying that President Bush made the wrong choice when it comes to stem cell research.

This field holds great promise for medical breakthroughs that could treat a wide range of disabling illnesses, from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases to cancer and diabetes. There are no guaranteed results, and much work lies ahead, but federal policy is choking research instead of encouraging it.
