The second most common cancer among women is breast cancer. Although breast cancer is usually thought of as a women’s disease, men also are vulnerable. During the month of October, the goal of the American Cancer Society is to spread breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer prevention begins with establishing healthy habits. Research shows that positive lifestyle changes can decrease breast cancer risks. Routine doctor visits, screenings, listening to your body and living a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and healthy eating could decrease your risk of any disease, including breast cancer.

Breast cancer begins when cells grow out of control and usually form a tumor that can be detected by X-ray or felt as a lump. The tumor is malignant or cancerous if the cells invade tissue or spread to other areas of the body. Breast cancer can originate from different parts of the breast. The most common breast cancers start in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple or in the glands that make breast milk.
