Cliff Williams / TPI Elmore County Commission chair Bart Mercer said the county has experience fast growth and their are needs such as in public safety, fire protection, infrastructure and a new jail.

Elmore County has been growing in population forcing needed infrastructure improvements and upgrades and more funding for public safety.

Elmore County leaders including the Elmore County Commission, the Elmore County Economic Development Authority, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office and the Elmore County Fire Fighters Association started putting their heads together to figure out a solution to many of the needs of one of the fastest growing counties in Alabama. In 25 years the population of Elmore County has nearly doubled. The long and short of it is Elmore County needs more funding, according to county officials.

Cliff Williams / TPI Alabama state representative Troy Stubbs said Enhance Elmore passed in the legislature the last term. Some measures are already in place and others will be voted on by the public in November.

Cliff Williams / TPI Elmore County Economic Development Authority chief operations officer Richie Beyer said the levelized lodging tax provided the funds from Elmore County for 17 Springs and other quality of life projects across the county. He said because of state laws, the lodging tax could only be used for economic development.
