Elmore County guard Marley Hicks (23) gets ready to go up for a layup through contact against Wetumpka's Mya Richardson (10).

As fall transitions into winter and girls basketball season takes center stage, the Elmore County Panthers aren’t focused on wins or losses, but rather taking steps toward getting better and winning the area tournament in January.

“Just like baseball, softball, volleyball, area is the only thing that matters,” Elmore County coach Kyle Caldwell said. “You can go winless, but if you win your area, then you host the area championship. So your area games are the only ones that really, really matter. And so using all of these games to build up to your area is the main thing. You don’t want to peak too early.”
