The plan was simple for the Benjamin Russell boys basketball team in the final seconds against Central Coosa — find open space and get to the basket.

After the Cougars’ Zaccai Lauderdale found paydirt with less than 30 seconds left in overtime, Jaydon Brooks inbounded the ball to Alijah Johnson, who quickly dished it out to the hot-handed Charlie Lumpkin. He dribbled down court, slashing his way through the open space in front of him, and with the clock winding down, bounced the ball off the backboard while fighting through contact. And just like Lumpkin had been doing all game, he hit the shot.
