A national blood shortage is rippling into Tallapoosa County.
KellyHodges, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central East Alabama, said the country is amid a blood shortage due to a lack of donations over the summer. The chapter supplies blood throughout 16 counties, including in Coosa and Tallapoosa counties, but the issue has now extended to the Alexander City area.

Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah,
Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon,
Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Russell,
Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa,
Walker, and Winston Counties.
* WHEN...From midnight Sunday Night to 10 AM CST Monday.
* IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin
is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of
subfreezing temperatures could cause pipes to burst.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a
hat, and gloves.
Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure
portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills
inside.
To prevent freezing and possible bursting of pipes they should be
wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly.
