The first of four duplex homes that became a flashpoint of controversy for the City of Alexander City earlier this year was incinerated into a pile of ashes Wednesday.

The city council voted to buy 56 acres of property in January encompassing the former Russell Sales Office, Russell Guest House, frontage on U.S. Highway 280 and the duplexes. In April, the city closed on the $9.1 million deal, most of which involves the renovation and conversion of the 85,000-square foot sales office into a new city hall where all departments will be consolidated.
