DIXIE DARLINGS: Two local women part of 60th anniversary of iconic dance team

In 1958, Benjamin Russell grads Elizabeth Lyon, Barbara Johnson and Misha Towery were given scholarships and selected to the elite 50-member Dixie Darlings Dance Teat at MIssissippi Southern University.

In 1958, three wide-eyed girls from Alexander City went off to Hattiesburg, Mississippi with the goal of becoming part of the fledgling Dixie Darlings dance team at what was then known as Mississippi Southern University.

After two long trips and two grueling tryouts that included 300 girls, Benjamin Russell grads Elizabeth Lyon, Barbara Johnson and Misha Towery were given scholarships and selected to the elite 50-member team. Over the next few years, they say being part of that team changed their lives.
