Samuel Higgs / TPI Benjamin Russell's Ella Rose Baker rockets a pitch towards an Opelika batter on Tuesday. She commanded the circle for all seven innings, throwing three strikeouts.
The saying, “defense wins championships,” continues to find its way to mingle with different sports. And for the Benjamin Russell softball team, defense intermixed with some crucial hits was enough to obtain its third win of the season over Opelika.
Ella Rose Baker got the start and finish in the circle, going the distance for all seven innings. She surrendered four hits, one run and three strikeouts; recording 21 outs in total. If the Bulldogs were able to make contact with the ball, however, they seemed to be directed towards the one-two punch of Kyleigh Leonard and Zoya Menniefield manning the middle of the field, each making multiple plays on defense.
