Part 2: The Economy of Wine

Wine

As promised in the September issue of Lake magazine, here is part two of an assessment on how wine has fared in the light of an uncertain national economy. Suffice to say, for the most part, the short-term outlook is positive; for starters, interest rates may be coming down soon. Or maybe not.

What we do know is that despite the threat of runaway inflation, wine prices have remained mostly reasonable. Good, affordable wines are not too difficult to find (affordable being a relative term). In part one, I identified some of my favorite summer whites that are price friendly. But contrary to what many may believe, white wine consumption doesn’t stop with the end of summer. There are many year-round occasions and dishes that call for a nice white, perhaps one with more body than the summertime swizzlers.
