After qualifying six wrestlers for the AHSAA Class 5A state tournament in Huntsville last weekend, the Holtville Bulldogs wrestled hard with the hopes to reach a podium finish. Holtville had one wrestler, sophomore AJ Reeves at heavyweight, place in the tournament at fourth. The other five came up just short, although still experienced a successful season.

Reeves opened his tournament run with a pin over Ramsay’s Dreydan Wright in just 1:20. He then suffered a tough loss to Scottsboro’s Ayden Mashburn — this year’s second-place finisher — by tie-breaker, 1-0. In the consolation semifinals Reeves defeated Arab’s Caleb Campbell’s by decision, 7-0, to make his way into the third place match. There Reeves faced Montevallo’s Kyler Mitchell in a rematch of the South Sectionals heavyweight first place match but came up short, losing via pin in 1:55.
