There have always been college football players that transferred from one school to another for one reason or another. Back in the day, Auburn might lose one or two players every few years, but they were almost always someone who was never going to see the field under normal circumstances. 

Of course, there were rules that forced players to sit out a year unless transferring to a lower division. Coaches also had the power to block players from transferring to certain schools. Maybe that was unfair to the athletes. Certainly, allowing coaches to dictate their future destinations was a bridge too far, but at least there was some continuity and order in college football.
