Not many people from in and around the Tallassee area will have the opportunity to be in attendance at Churchill Downs for this year’s running of the Kentucky Derby. However, the members of the Tallassee Mt. Vernon Theatre’s Operations Board has a remedy for that by hosting its second Derby Day Party May 3 at the City of Tallassee Guest House.
“We had around 170 people at 1220 last year for our first Derby Day,” said Kami Scarborough, head of the Tallassee Mt. Vernon Theatre’s Fundraising board. “Moving it to the Guest House gives us a little more room.”

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and
pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any
circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stoke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and
drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
