It almost felt as though tragedy struck in the opening minutes of the Benjamin Russell girls basketball team’s game against Calera in the Class 6A Area 5 Championship.

Senior guard and points leader Ami Edwards drove into the paint with a layup seemingly in the midst. But when she planted, she immediately dropped to the ground and would miss the remainder of the game with an apparent knee injury.

Samuel Higgs / TPI Benjamin Russell's Gabby McKinney guards the Calera point guard in the Class 6A Area 5 championship game. She finished with five points while also being named to the all-tournament team.
