An Alabama senator is pushing for a new legislature after the death of University of Georgia student Laken Riley has taken the country by storm.

On Jan. 7, U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) introduced the Laken Riley Act as her first piece in the 119th Congress. According to a press release from Britt, the Laken Riley Act would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting offenses and would mandate them to be detained until they are removed from the United States to prevent aliens from committing further crimes or reoffending. The legislation would also ensure states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or who violate the law, the release reads.
