Commission sets aside money for animal care

File / The Outlook

The Tallapoosa County Commission said Tuesday it had set aside some money in the 2024 budget to address the issue of roaming dogs throughout the county. Currently, the only shelter serving the county is Lake Martin Animal Shelter in Alexander City.

For the last two months, advocates for animal rights have attended the Tallapoosa County Commission meetings. People such as Jennie Zinn, founder of the Lake Martin Animal Sanctuary, and Don Harper have asked the commissioners to open a pound.

Tuesday’s meeting was no different as Harper told the commission about an incident on Sept. 29 where he said a child in Dadeville was attacked and had to be sent to Birmingham for further treatment. He asked the commissioners for an update, to which Steve Robinson said, “We are actively working on that.”
