The Dixie Sailing Club is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. However, the club first started informally in 1961.

At that point, it was a group of sailors, primarily from Montgomery, who went to Lake Martin and some of the other nearby lakes to sail. A few years later, Russell Lands offered to lease them some property by the now South Ridge Harbor. They had a clubhouse, storage and about 15 cabins.
