'Just have to keep praying:' Pandemic takes toll on local hairstylists, barbers

Root 49 co-owner Chelsea Lutz cuts William Trout’s hair at her business in Dadeville. She has been closed for five weeks, which means she is not bringing in any income. Lutz is just one of many hairstylists and barbers out of work due to Gov. Kay Ivey’s shutdown.

As Gov. Kay Ivey slowly rolls out a plan to reopen businesses, one industry still not able to open is hair salons and barber shops which has led to a grave financial impact on those in the field.

Most hairstylists are also self-employed, which is the largest group of workers struggling to receive unemployment benefits.
