Police department to reinstate public safety academy

The Citizen Public Safety Academy will give citizens an overarching understanding of what first responders do day-to-day, according to Capt. Rashunsky McKinney.

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alexander City police and fire departments will be hosting a 10-week public safety course for citizens.

Starting March 5, classes will be held at the Municipal Complex from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday. Multiple departments will be hosting the classes. According to Captain Rashunsky McKinney, each week will have a different department giving insight to what their day-to-day tasks look like. Animal control, Special Response Group (SRG), patrol division, emergency management and several other public safety departments will lead classes each week.
