Southern Prep’s Kevin Mason already had set the AISA single-game scoring record this past football season. Clearly that was not enough for the junior.
In a 82-56 playoff victory over Meadowview in Nov., Mason tossed 11 total touchdowns to set the Alabama state record for passing touchdowns in a single game.
The gunslinger also rushed in a score, setting the state total scoring record.
“He is just one of our boys,” Southern Prep coach Roland Bell said with a laugh postgame. “We have shown this year, even in tough games, that we can put up points.”
Mason’s junior year was truly a breathtaking one when looking at his final numbers.
His finished his season with over 3,100 yards passing and 43 passing touchdowns. He completed 48% of his passes and averaged over 230 passing yards per game.
On the ground, Mason led his team in rushing yards per game with 105.3 per outing. In total, he ran for 1,369 yards.
Mason scored 14 times on just 95 total rushes, meaning 15% of the time Mason took off it was good for a touchdown.
On a national scale, Mason’s 4,481 total yards of offense were fourth in the country. His 3,102 passing yards were good for sixth in all 50 states.
He led the entire state of Alabama in total passing yards and finished sixth in the state in rushing.
