The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Derek Chen has a deep connection to the United States and specifically Alabama.

Although he was born and raised in California, he has spent much of his adult life in Alabama, attending law school at Samford University in Birmingham and getting his MBA in business from the University of Alabama.
