The beautiful quilt pictured below was created by Alexander City native Sally Mason using customized T-shirts that were available for volunteers who participated in the annual Lake Martin Resource Association Renew our Rivers shoreline cleanup. The shirts featured artwork provided by third and fourth grade students at Nathaniel Stephens Elementary School. The winning art was chosen each year from 20 finalists. The entire Stephens School faculty and students also received shirts as part of the annual event. Complementary T-shirts were available courtesy of Alabama Power Company’s Renew our Rivers program.Â
The annual art contest started in 2010, and the quilt represents 10 consecutive years of the ROR cleanup through the T-shirt art. The art contest was a part of an environmental education program led by Ann Goree and art teachers Debra Griffith and Penny Adamson. The students were encouraged to focus on what they enjoyed doing on Lake Martin and the value of keeping the lake litter free.
