President Lyndon Johnson designated February as American Heart Month in 1964, after determining that diseases of the heart and circulatory system were responsible for over half of all deaths that occurred each year.

This month, we emphasize the importance of cardiac health. As with many other health issues, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Financially, it’s much more expensive to treat heart disease than it is to prevent it. And while heart disease can’t necessarily be cured, its effects can be mitigated, and in some cases reversed, through medication, procedures and, most importantly, lifestyle modifications.
