Thanksgiving at Home

Roasted Turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner.

I have travel and Thanksgiving food on my mind. I probably need one more coffee to try to make sense of this column, but what I want to say is that the best part of traveling is coming home. The holidays involve going home for a lot of people. It’s funny how many Southerners have two homes. Home is where you live, but it’s also where your people live. When I was growing up, both sets of my grandparents lived in Alexander City, so we never had to travel anywhere. Family came to us.

The late celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain once said, “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”
