China to approve 'ethnic unity' law condemned by rights groups

People watch a Chinese New Year performance of traditional Chinese dances with a sculptural flag of the Communist Party seen in the background at the plaza of the Museum of the Communist Party of China in Beijing on March 1, 2026, ahead of the opening of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC).

China was set to approve Thursday what it called an "ethnic unity" law, which rights advocates warn could further marginalise minority groups like the Uyghurs.

The draft law, set to be passed by the National People's Congress, would formalise policies to promote Mandarin as the "national common language" in education, official business and public places.
