Retired director for student life at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind John Jernigan spoke to Kiwanis Club members about the Deaf community and culture last Thursday. 

Jernigan learned sign language by taking classes at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He then worked with the American Cancer Society for a short time before starting his 37 year career at AIDB. In his career he met a doctor who is deaf as he was a graduation speaker at AIDB. One of his students became an attorney while another is an engineer at NASA. Another alumni became a filmmaker.
