About five years ago, Kellyton resident Steve Rogers started hiking and in May reached his ultimate hiking goal — reaching the base summit of Mt. Everest.

Steve Rogers was so inspired by his Mt. Everest guide and the motivation he gave him to continue to reach the base camp, he wrote a book about reaching your goals.

“I saw a documentary on it 20 years ago and I just said ‘one day I'm gonna do that,’” he said. “I trained for it for a year, but nothing got me ready for the altitude. The highest I was up was 18,500 feet, and there were a couple of times I seriously considered ‘I'm not going to make it’ just because the air is so thin — you're just gasping for air.”

After reaching the base camp of Mt. Everest, Steve Rogers caught this sunrise in Khumba Valley on his way back down. He said it was one of the most beautiful things he saw during his trip.
