Fraud can happen any time of year, but the Department of Justice, the FBI and National Center for Disaster Fraud are trying to raise awareness that in the aftermath of a natural disaster, fraud is all too common.

The Department of Justice warned in a press release Thursday that many individuals feel compelled to contribute to victim assistance programs and organizations across the country in the wake of a disaster. The DOJ and FBI said they would like to remind the public to do due diligence before giving to those who solicit donations on behalf of tornado victims.
