Changes are on the horizon for homestead exemptions for those 65 and older and those who are retired because of total and permanent disability, according to a law recently passed by the Alabama Legislature.

“The (maximum income for an exemption) used to be $7,500 … and that has now been raised to $12,000 combined net taxable income of the taxpayer and his or her spouse,” said Revenue Commissioner Linda Harris.
