When U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade struck down Alabama’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from marrying on Friday, she ruled the ban violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment.

Before lines could start forming at probate court offices across the state, Judge Granade issued a 14-day stay on Sunday to give the state time to appeal her decision to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
