BRHS to name new court after local legend

Submitted / TPI The new Benjamin Russell High School basketball court to be named after former basketball coach Paul Carney.

When some think of Benjamin Russell basketball they think of one person — former coach Paul Carney. 

Carney served as the Benjamin Russell and Laurel High School basketball coach for 23 years, starting in 1968 following his graduation from Tuskegee University. During his time at the helm, he accrued over 200 career wins, six area championships and an Elite 8 berth in 1982. Not only was serving as head coach for the basketball team, but also as the wide receivers coach for the football team.
