In their garish black and white stripes, whistles and bright yellow flags, referees tend to blend into the background. Very rarely do they draw positive attention or praise from fans or coaches or players; typically, a referee only becomes someone worth attention when he or she makes a call that one side disagrees with.

So, the question becomes, why would anyone want to be a referee? To be berated when a disagreeable decision is made by fans and sometimes coaches, while receiving less than full-time pay or benefits. Most people are content with opining from the bleachers, joining in with the crowd.
