Creek tribe celebrates historic swindling

Wetumpka leaders attend the first Sucker Day.

Did you know the land where the Wind Creek Wetumpka casino now stands was once known as Odshiapofa (there are other spellings), which means Hickory Tree? Odshiapofa was the last capitol of the Muscogee Creek Nation before the tribe’s removal to Oklahoma in the 1830s.

The Muscogee Creek chose to name the place they now lived after the home they’d left behind. The spelling is a little different but Wetumka, Oklahoma, was named after our own Wetumpka, Alabama.
