Opening day of dove season celebrates friends, family, food and fun with more than a century of Southern tradition. Most avid local hunters cut their teeth as youth on a dove hunt, and taking their place around a dove field holds as much ritual in the South as watching the Iron Bowl in Alabama.

Though there are places where hunters can pay to sit on a field, Alexander City’s John Ballard said hosting an opening day dove hunt is as much about spending time with friends and family as it is about shooting birds.
