A few weeks back I bought a painting by Amanda Davis, a beautiful young woman with Mississippi roots and a bright future. She hasn’t been painting all that long, and it isn’t her day job, but something in Amanda’s style and colors is fetching and original.

The painting shows several sailboats, a regatta’s worth, tossing about on an inky sea. It looks as if the race might be interrupted at any moment by a summer squall. The sky is rich with mauve and purple and the occasional tuft of white cloud. Anything might happen.
