A passport can take travelers to some remarkably remote corners of the planet, but it cannot open every door. Around the world, islands, caves, military installations, Indigenous territories, religious sites and underground vaults remain closed to ordinary visitors.

The reasons vary. Some restrictions protect people who have chosen to remain isolated from the outside world. Others safeguard fragile ecosystems or ancient art, preserve sacred traditions, or keep valuable assets and national security operations away from public view.
