Annie Ruth Holt was born on August 8, 1934 in Equality, Alabama to the parents of Mark Gilbert and Cassie Bell Gilbert. 

Annie received her education at W.B. Doby High School in Elmore, County, Alabama.  She furthered her education at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama where she received a bachelor's degree.
