We celebrate the 248th birthday of our great nation this week and only with the assistance of Almighty God will we continue to prosper as a country. I humbly suggest we all contemplate the freedom, so easily taken for granted, we enjoy through the blood, sweat and sacrifice of others. With the idea of birth in mind, I’m also reminded of the cycle of life. Here are some sports legends that passed away in 2023. Be safe and enjoy your holiday.

Charles White on Jan. 11 – The 1979 Heisman Trophy winner from USC still holds the Trojan record for career rushing yards with 6,245. He was a key figure in the Men of Troy’s 1978 national title, being awarded Rose Bowl MVP. Sadly, he became involved with drugs and financial instability in his post college days. He died of cancer. He was 64.
