For any athletic team, building the program from the ground up is a prerequisite for success. Building a program doesn’t start with the varsity team or even the junior varsity. It doesn’t start in middle school either; in fact, it starts far earlier — down at the youth level. That’s why successful programs, like Edgewood Academy’s baseball program, start their recruiting efforts by hosting summer camps for kids as young as 5 and as old as 13.

“It’s a big fundraiser for us,” Edgewood coach Justin Chandler said. “The biggest reason in my opinion is that it teaches our (athletes) to give back. When they were that age, they looked up to these players. When you’re six, seven, eight, nine years old and a varsity kid is helping you with your swing or teaching you to field or hyping you up, it means everything to you at that age.”
